This worksheet provides a guided example illustrating how to add fractions with unlike denominators by finding common denominators. Students will be tasked with solving eight "milkshake" fraction problems to reinforce their understanding through practice. Additionally, a word problem at the bottom of the page offers an opportunity to apply these skills in a real-world context.
Imagine you have two milkshakes, but they're in different-sized cups. One cup is filled up 1/2 of the way, and the other is filled up 1/3 of the way. To find out how much you have altogether, you need the cups to have the same size, like wearing the same shirt. First, find a size that both 2 and 3 can fit into, which is 6. Change 1/2 to 3/6 because if you divide the large cup into 6 parts, 3 parts are filled, and change 1/3 to 2/6 because if you divide the other cup into 6 parts, 2 parts are filled. Now add them: 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6. So, if you pour them into a same-sized new cup, it would be filled 5/6 of the way. Delicious!
