In 1st grade, students are typically expected to understand and work with numbers up to 10. They should be able to count to 10, both forwards and backward, and identify numbers up to 10 when they see them. They should be able to write these numbers correctly and understand the basic concepts of addition and subtraction using numbers up to 10. They should also understand the relationship between numbers and quantities and the concepts of greater than, less than, and equal to with numbers up to 10.
