In this lesson, students will learn about the three standard states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. They'll be able to recognize and name common examples of each category and get opportunities to develop their own examples.

Imagine your favorite toy, a glass of milk, and the air you blow into a balloon. A solid keeps its shape; it doesn't flow like water or fill up a space like air. A liquid, like milk, can be poured and takes the shape of its container but stays flat on top. Finally, gas, like the air in your balloon, is all around us, but we can't see it, and it spreads out to fill up whatever space it's in. So, you can tell if something is a solid, liquid, or gas by seeing if it keeps its shape, flows like a drink, or spreads out and is invisible!
