In Part I of this activity, you will have to fill in the blanks with either "a" or "an." This part is straightforward. But it gets challenging in Part II! You will again have to fill in "a" or "an," but now the rule goes beyond just the starting letter of the next word. You'll have to listen to the sound of the word to decide whether to use "a" or "an." Remember, we use "a" before words that start with a consonant sound and "an" before words that begin with a vowel sound. Practice makes perfect! Let's give it a try.

When you have a word that starts with a vowel sound, you use "an" before it to make it easier to say. For example, "an elephant" or "an umbrella." For words that start with a consonant sound, you use "a," like "a cat" or "a house." So, remember: "an" for vowel sounds and "a" for consonant sounds!
