The worksheet titled "Draw the Missing Emojis in a Pattern and Explain the Rule" lets students explore patterns with fun emoji faces. Each series of emojis has one, two, or three blank boxes where students must draw the face that comes next in the pattern.

There's also room at the bottom of each series of faces where students write the rule that each pattern follows. Sometimes, they write the rule for a single series of emojis, but some come in sets of two where students discover that the same rule applies to more than one series of emojis, helping them identify similar patterns, even when the pictures are different.

Learning patterns is an important math skill, but it can also be fun to practice. Students can use manipulatives to create patterns and have a partner figure out what comes next.

It can be even more fun to incorporate images that students find fun and engaging. For example, students can figure out which emojis are missing in a series or complete a series of holiday pictures before Christmas or Valentine's Day.

You can extend student learning by also requiring them to state the pattern that's being used. It helps them think beyond the picture or item that comes next and challenges them to describe the pattern in a more general way. They could then create a pattern of their own using different pictures that follow the same rule.
