Students practice their phonemic awareness, phonics, and spelling skills on the worksheet titled "Decoding Phonetic Spelling: Writing the Correct Way to Spell Each Word." Each section starts with a fun prompt about being a pronunciation detective or helping a robot learn how to spell words the right way. Students read the phonemic spelling of a list of words and write the correct spelling of each word on the line. Common phonemic symbols are listed at the bottom of the page to help students decode each word, and a word bank is included at the top to help them zero in on the right word. Later on, worksheet sections ask students to write the correct spelling of each word without a word bank to help!
It is common for lower elementary school students to write words the way they sound. You can help them learn how to spell words correctly by allowing them to compare the phonemic spelling of words to their correct spelling. For example, the phonemic spelling "n?z" can be written side-by-side with the correct spelling of the word "nose." Students can see that the letter "s" can sometimes make a "z" sound. Students can read the phonemic spelling and write the correct spelling of each word, or you could play a fun game where students come up to the board, and the first to spell the word the correct way wins.
