The story "Betsy Ross and the American Flag" follows the life of Elizabeth Griscom, known as Betsy, who was born into a Quaker family in Philadelphia in 1752. In a large family, Betsy acquired sewing skills and perseverance from her great-aunt, Sarah. Completing her schooling by age twelve, Betsy became an apprentice to an upholsterer, which set her trajectory as a skilled seamstress. Defying her parents' disapproval, she married John Ross, a non-Quaker, with whom she opened an upholstery shop. As political unrest increased in the colonies, John joined the guard, but unfortunately, an explosion led to his death. Betsy continued her work, and her abilities eventually caught the attention of General Washington, who entrusted her with crafting the first American flag.
