Second Grade Morning Work

In terms of reading and writing skills, by the end of second grade, children are expected to be able to write compound sentences and use descriptive words. They should be perfecting their decoding and fluency skills and be able to spell grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words. They should be able to recognize and decode words with common prefixes and suffixes. In terms of Language Arts skills, by the end of second grade, students should be able to use collective nouns, form and use frequently occurring irregular plural nouns, use reflexive pronouns, form and use the past tense of frequently occurring irregular verbs, use adjectives and adverbs, and choose between them depending on what is to be modified, produce, expand, and rearrange complete simple and compound sentences, capitalize holidays, product names, and geographic names, and use commas and apostrophes. In terms of math, by the end of second grade children should be able to add and subtract easily up to 100, add up to four two-digit numbers, add and subtract to and from 20 using mental math, understand 1s, 10s, and 100s and their place value (including comparing numbers using <, >, and = ), and skip count by 5s, 10s, and 100s to 1,000.
