R.L. Stine was born on October 8, 1943. He was born in Ohio. He is the oldest of three children. R.L. stands for Robert Lawrence. When he was a boy, everyone called him Bob. They still do.


Stine started writing when he was nine years old. He found an old typewriter in the attic. His mother wanted him to go play outside. He would rather stay inside. He loved writing stories. He loved writing jokes. Stine would take his writing to school. He would hand it out to his friends. He often got in trouble for that. He kept writing.


In high school, Stine wrote for the school newspaper. He went to college. He graduated from Ohio State University. Then he moved to New York. He wanted to become a writer.
