"Dear Diary," Kathy wrote, "You won't believe what happened today!
I can't believe it myself, and I already knew Dad and Mom like Billy better than me. Dad took Billy to the Surf Shop. He bought a boogie board for him. Life just isn't fair. That old Billy gets everything he wants. I'll bet they won't buy anything for me. I don't care, though. I don't want to go to the beach anyway. They can just like Billy best. I'll show them. I have to go on this vacation, but I don't have to have a good time. I'll just stay in the hotel room and sleep or something. Maybe I will get sick. That would serve them right! If they really loved me, they would take me back to the amusement park. Later."
Kathy closed her diary and locked it. Nobody was going to look at her diary. Not if she could help it!
"Kathy," her mother called from the living room. "Kathy, come in the living room. I have something to show you."
Kathy thought about pretending that she didn't hear her mother. She really wanted everyone to know how unhappy she was, but she knew it was a bad idea to ignore her father or mother.
"Yes, Mom," she sighed. "I'll be there in a minute."
Kathy looked at herself in the mirror. She made a face and stuck out her tongue. Now, there! That's what she wanted to do, but she knew that would be a mistake, too. Finally she dragged herself into the living room.
Kathy's mother was reading the newspaper.
