Why Me?, Part 4

By the time Tom reached home, he had thought about the boy in the Burger Barn a lot. He tried just to forget about what he saw, but no matter how hard he tried, it kept creeping back into his thoughts. He knew it was trying to tell him something, but he just didn't want to hear it.

Tom came through the kitchen door quietly. He was still thinking about that boy. His mother was standing at the sink washing dishes.

"Hello, Tom," she said. "I've been worried about you."

"I'm sorry, Mom," Tom said. "Hey, look, I have this question to ask you.

"Go ahead," his mother said.

"Well, there was this boy in Burger Barn. He was a lot younger than I am. He was so rude to his parents. No matter what they tried to do for him, he was just hateful. Do all little kids act that way?" Tom asked.

"No, not all of them. Why do you ask?" his mother said.

"I don't know. It just bothered me," Tom replied.

"Why did it bother you?" His mother dried her hands on a dishtowel and sat down at the table with Tom.
