The war in Iraq began in March 2003. The United States had many reasons to start the war. It believed that Iraq was making weapons. These weapons could hurt many people. It also believed that Iraq was helping terrorists. President Bush believed that Iraq would try to hurt the United States.
The ruler of Iraq had been cruel. He used bombs against his own people. Thousands of Iraqi people died. Saddam Hussein lived in luxury. He built forty new palaces for himself and his family. He did this while many of his people were poor and starving.
President Bush wanted other countries to help with the war against Iraq. Great Britain has helped the United States in the war. Australia and Poland have helped, too. Many other countries have sent food and medical help.
