When He Was My Age

"Grandpa, who was Sergeant York?" Anne asked.

"Now, why would you ask me that?" Grandpa North replied.

"The television news reporter said that October 8 is Alvin C. York Day. She said it is a day to honor Sergeant York."

"Well, then," Grandpa North said, "Sergeant York was a very brave soldier. He fought during World War I. He and another man captured many enemy soldiers all by themselves. He was one of the most decorated American soldiers in World War I. "Decorated" means that he won medals or other awards."

"Did he die in the war?" Anne asked.

"No, he lived for many years after the war," Anne's grandfather said. "He died in 1964. I remember that year because it was my last year of high school."

"Did you know Sergeant York, Grandpa?"

"No, Anne, but I wish I had known him," Grandpa North said.

"Why, Grandpa?"
