Beth had always had a hard time because her mother was an alcoholic. She thought that she did a good job keeping her family's terrible secret. Beth wasn't in the popular crowd at school, but she was so lean and coordinated that she made the cheering squad anyway.
Beth was surprised when she heard her name mentioned in the locker room after cheering practice. She didn't mean to listen in to the conversation, but she hid around the corner locker because she was so curious about what the popular girls were saying about her.
"I found out something weird," said Vicki. Vicki was the head cheerleader. She was the leader of the pack, and the other girls turned to her with interest.
"What?" said Stacy and Cheryl together.
"You know how Beth always makes excuses about why she can't have cheerleading breakfasts at her house before football games?" asked Vicki.
