Allison was doing one of her favorite things. She was watching cooking shows on television. She loved having uninterrupted time to watch a few episodes. She always learned a few things about cooking.
Allison cooked regularly at home. Her mother was a busy lawyer, and her father taught at a school 45 minutes away. Allison was often home before they were. She had developed a real interest in cooking and baking and was even considering becoming a chef. At Christmas, she asked for a set of cookbooks. She'd been marking interesting recipes in them. Her parents and brother really enjoyed several of the recipes that she tried. A few had not come out so well, but she learned a lot in the process of preparing them!
Today's cooking show was demonstrating how to liven up hamburgers. Usually, Allison simply made meat patties by forming balls of ground beef and then patting them down. Today's show suggested adding various spices and condiments to add additional flavor. Allison hadn't thought about adding soy sauce, ketchup, or mustard directly to the ground beef mixture. She decided to make several patties and try different condiments in each.
First, she divided ground beef into equal portions in separate mixing bowls. Then, she poured a condiment into each bowl, and mixed the meat and flavoring together with a wooden spoon. One by one, she placed each mixture onto a cutting board and formed a patty about one inch thick. Then Allison followed another tip from the show. Using her thumb, she made a dimple in the center of each patty. This caused all the patties to cook more evenly. Her brother watched her do all this.
By the time their mother came through the door, Allison was grilling burgers on the indoor grill with her brother's help.
