What Makes Canada Great?

Canada Day

Reading Comprehension for July 1

If you ask an American what Canadians are like, you might get some funny answers. Some Americans think that Canadians are the same as Americans. (Except for a funny accent, eh?) Some think that Canadians all live in log cabins in a snowy wasteland. Sometimes though, even Canadians don't know who they are.

What makes Canadians different from Americans? One difference is seen in one of the icons of our nation: the Mounties. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are legendary.

The American West was called the Wild West for a good reason. The people were often without any way to enforce laws for the general peace. Many did as they wished because of that. That lawlessness did not happen in Canada. Even as people moved into the Canadian West, the Mounties moved there, too. Law and order were the rule, not the exception.
