Many religions have promoted unity for thousands of years. Religious people sometimes feel that their faith is the only one that is right. The Baha'i Faith honors all other religions. Even though Baha'i Faith is not ancient, millions of followers love its concept of unity and embrace its teachings.
Just as John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus, the Baha'i Faith also had a man who announced that a Promised One would come after him. This man, who was known as the Bab, lived in 19th-century Persia. The word "bab" means gate or door in Arabic. At that time, Persian society had a lot of turmoil. People wanted help. The Bab had a great surprise that opened the door of hope for many Persians.
On May 23, 1844, the Bab announced that he had had a divine revelation. He said that a Promised One would come. This man would help them become closer to God. The Persians thought this was a terrific present and were excited when this Promised One arrived. And, like many great teachers and prophets before him, the Promised One had to make sacrifices in order to fulfill his mission.
