It is almost 7:00, and Callie has to get up. It is time to go to work. She is a carpenter. A carpenter builds things out of wood.
Today Callie will help build something very special. She and the other carpenter ants are building a nest. The nest is for Queen Cassie. Cassie will lay her eggs soon.
Queen Cassie has two thousand workers. She is the mother of all of them. Now they are big enough to work. They take care of her.
Callie puts on her overalls. She puts on her shoes and socks. She puts on a hat. She drinks some honeydew. She eats a bite of bread. Then she drinks a glass of water. It will be a long day.
Callie and the other carpenter ants are black. Some of them have a bit of red on them, too. They are only about one-fourth inch long, but they are hard workers.
