What Do Plants Eat?

When you were a baby, you ate only milk. Now you eat lots of foods. You eat to get energy. You need energy to live. You need energy to grow. Plants live and grow, too. But what do plants eat?

Plants can make their own food. They use the light from the sun. They use water. They use a gas from the air called carbon dioxide.

Plants have a special chemical called chlorophyll (KLOR-uh-fill). It gives plants their green color. Chlorophyll can change light from the sun into chemical energy. This energy can change carbon dioxide and water into something new.
