What Can You Personify?
Personification [per-SAHN-ih-fih-KAY-shun] is a big, fun word. What does it mean? To figure it out, we look for the root word. Do you see it? It's at the beginning of the word. Person is the root word. You know what a person is! This word, personification, means to describe something that is not a person as if it were a person. Objects and animals can be described like that. Babies and movie stars cannot; they are already people!
Have you ever told someone that a certain book or toy is your best friend? If you have, you used personification. Friends are people, you know. Describing books and toys as your friends doesn't mean you are confused. It simply means that they are special to you.
Have you ever told someone that a food or game is calling your name? Food can't speak. Some games do "talk," but games are not living things. Saying that a food or game is calling your name is another example of personification. It means that you have a strong desire to eat that food or play that game!
