National Volunteer Week

Justin and Jessie sat looking at the pile of weeds between them.

"We are doing a good job!" Justin said to his sister.

"Yes," agreed Jessie. She reached out to tug on another weed. "It won't be long until the park is pretty!"

A shadow fell over them. The two children looked up and froze.

It was Big Fred. He was a bully who lived near the park. All the kids were afraid of him.

Big Fred put his hands on his hips. "What are you little runts doing?"

Justin gulped. "We are pulling weeds out of this flowerbed."

Big Fred grinned. It was not a nice look on him. "So what did you do?"

"What do you mean?" Jessie asked. She looked at Justin, but he just shrugged.
