Watch Out for Peanuts! Peanut Allergy Basics

National Peanut Butter Fudge Day

Reading Comprehension for November 20

How do I love peanut butter? Let me count the ways! Peanut butter sandwiches, peanut butter cereal, peanut butter cookies, peanut butter fudge, and even peanut butter smoothies are all delicious ways to enjoy this popular food. Peanut butter is comforting. Peanut butter is messy and fun. Did you know that 75% of American homes have peanut butter in them?

Growing peanuts has not changed much in over 100 years. America's 16,000 peanut farmers plant their crops after the last frost in April. The plants come up in about 10 days with fresh, round, green leaves. Small, yellow flowers bloom, and the peanuts are formed underground after the flowers pollinate themselves. Then -viola!- peanuts are harvested between 120 and 160 days, usually in September or October.

Peanut butter is made from a minimum of 90% peanuts. Many brands use no sweeteners, colors, or preservatives. Some companies add some natural sweeteners, salt, and a stabilizer so that the oil does not separate out. Peanut butter is healthy and delicious...but not for everyone.
