Art. For Virginia Lee Burton, it was always a part of her life. It brought her joy. It brought her love. It brought her fame. Art was not just a hobby to Virginia Lee Burton. It was everything.
Virginia Lee Burton was born in 1909. Her father was the dean of a college. Her mother was an artist. She wrote poetry. She also made music. Virginia grew up with art all around her. There was singing. There was dancing. Her parents performed puppet shows for her. At Christmas, her dad always gave her books. The books were filled with beautiful drawings. He would always read them aloud to her.
As she got older, she started singing and dancing in plays. She and her sister loved being a part of them. In high school, she started teaching her own dance class. In school, the only class she really liked was art. She was good at it, too. She was given a scholarship to art school.
