Valentine Cupcakes

"Dad, can we stop at the grocery store on the way home?" asked Betty. "I want to make something for Valentine's Day."

"I guess we can do that," said Dad. He glanced over at Betty before turning his eyes back to the road. "Is this for someone special? Someone I should know about?"

"He is special," said Betty, "but not the way you mean. He's a really good friend."

Dad nodded but didn't say anything else. He knew he'd find out more when Betty felt like talking.

Dad went with Betty into the store. He thought she wanted to buy Valentine cards. Instead she headed for the baking aisle. There she chose a package of red velvet cake mix and two cans of vanilla frosting.

As they headed for the checkout, Dad asked, "Do you have all the other ingredients and things you need?"

"Oh," said Betty, "I have everything but the cupcake baking cups. I checked this morning before school."

The two turned back, found what they needed, and then checked out. Betty was quiet as they drove home. She had a busy evening ahead if she was going to get everything done.
