Uranus, the Sideways Planet

Uranus (YUR-uhn-nuhs) is the seventh planet from the sun and the third-largest planet in our solar system. If Uranus were hollow, more than sixty Earths could fit inside it.

Temperatures on Uranus average around 350F degrees below zero. Four hundred fifty mile per hour winds blow blue-green clouds of methane gas through the planet's upper atmosphere. From Uranus, our sun would look like just another star in the sky because it is more than 1.7 billion miles away. As a result of this huge distance, Uranus receives very little light and heat from the sun. It takes light from the sun about three hours to reach Uranus! In contrast, sunlight reaches Earth in eight minutes.
