Another name for this position is the U.S. Permanent Representative to the U.N. He or she represents the United States on the U.N. Security Council, except in the rare situation when a more senior officer of the United States is present. This could include the secretary of state or president. The ambassador is nominated by the president. The nomination must be confirmed by the Senate. The ambassador is generally a cabinet-level position. However, during the George W.
