The word tutor is both a noun and a verb. A tutor is a private teacher. With a tutor you get a teacher all to yourself! To tutor is to teach one student. A tutor can tutor one who needs to be tutored! A teacher can teach one who needs to be taught.


A tutor may be another student. A student who loves reading may be asked to help another student with his or her reading skills. A tutor may be a high school or college student. A tutor may be an adult who used to be a teacher. Tutors like working with children. Many tutors get paid for their time.


Perhaps a student struggles with math. The teacher may suggest a tutor. The tutor can help the student. The tutor might test the student to find out what hasn't been learned yet. The tutor pinpoints the problem areas. Then he or she goes to work. If a student doesn't understand borrowing and carrying, the tutor will help the student with that type of problem. The tutor does more than just help with homework. The tutor makes sure that the student understands and masters the work!
