Can you imagine what it would be like to get fan mail? You might think that you have to be a famous athlete, singer, or actor to get fan mail. Did you know that writers get fan mail, too? Children's book author Tomie dePaola gets a lot of fan mail. He gets more than one hundred thousand letters every year!
Tomie dePaola has written more than one hundred books for kids. He does all of the drawings for his books, too. He also does drawings for other authors. It is something that he has wanted to do since he was four years old. Tomie dePaola's love of books came from his mother. She used to read to Tomie and his brother a lot. Tomie's parents also encouraged him to be an artist. They bought art supplies for him. They even gave him a special place in the attic where he could work. By the time he was ten years old, he was already writing books! He made books as gifts for his younger sisters.
