To Be Like Columbus

Columbus Day

Reading Comprehension for October 14

Zach dreamed of being on a big sailing ship one day. He had already read some books from the library about ships. Some had very tall masts and sails. Others were much smaller, but they were all sailing ships. The wind would fill the sails and push the ships through the sea faster and faster.

He was sure it must have been exciting to be an explorer years ago. He closed his eyes and tried to imagine what it must have been like for a man like Columbus. He was a man who was both right and wrong. The earth was round, but he did not find the Orient by sailing west. What he found was the New World.

Zach wondered what it must have been like to sail so far from home. Columbus sailed so far he could not turn around and go back without running out of food and fresh water. He had to go on and try to find enough food and water to get him and his men home again. His men were so nervous that they were ready to mutiny. That would be very scary. Zach shivered with excitement; then, he sighed. It was all so long ago.

Mom came into his room just then with her arms full of folded laundry.
