Thurgood Marshall was the first black American to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. That's the highest court in our country! The Supreme Court is made up of nine judges. We call them justices. They get the job from the president of the United States. He or she recommends each justice. Then a justice must be approved by Congress. The job is for life. A justice may be a justice until death. A justice may choose to resign or retire from the job. If a justice gets into trouble, he or she could be impeached. Marshall became a justice in 1967. He was chosen by President Lyndon Johnson. .....
