Three Kings Day

Reading Comprehension for January 6

According to Christian tradition, Jesus Christ was born about 2,000 years ago in a stable in Bethlehem. He was born in a stable because his parents, Joseph and Mary, couldn't find anyplace else in Bethlehem to stay. As the story goes, three kings heard of the upcoming birth and set out on camels to Bethlehem. They followed a star in the east that God sent to guide them to Jesus. The wise men brought with them gifts for the baby Jesus. This story is the beginning of Día de Los Reyes.

Día de Los Reyes--Three Kings Day--is when people celebrate the kings' journey to Bethlehem. This holiday is celebrated on January 6 all over Latin America. In some ways, it is celebrated like Christmas on December 25, but Three Kings Day is very special.

In Mexico, children prepare for the arrival of the three kings. Before they go to bed, they put their shoes outside. They fill their shoes with hay, so the camels will have something to eat. Some children put boxes filled with hay under their beds. In the morning, the hay is gone, and the children's shoes and boxes are filled with toys and gifts.
