Theodore Roosevelt National Park
There is a national park that honors our twenty-sixth president. His name was Theodore Roosevelt. The park that honors him is called Theodore Roosevelt National Park. It is in the Badlands of North Dakota.
Roosevelt came to this area when he was twenty-four. It was 1883. He wanted to hunt buffalo. There were not many left at this time. He fell in love with the land. He bought a cattle ranch before he left. Its name was Maltese Cross Ranch. He returned home to New York with new energy. Soon after he returned, sad things happened in Roosevelt's life. His wife and mother both died on the same day. He worked very hard so he wouldn't have time to be sad. He bought another ranch. Its name was Elkhorn Ranch. Roosevelt did not make much money as a rancher. The experience made him more mature. It strengthened his mind and body. He said that he would never have been able to become president without this experience.
Roosevelt's time in North Dakota made him want to save the land. As president, he set aside a lot of land for conservation. Because he did so much to protect the land, a park was named after him in 1947. It sits on the land where his ranches were.
