The World's Longest Rivers: The Amazon River
The Amazon is usually known as the second-longest river in the world. The Nile River of Africa is longer, but the Amazon carries more water. In fact, more than twenty percent of all the water in the world's rivers flows in the Amazon. It flows from west to east across the northern part of South America near the equator. The water begins high in the Andes Mountains. As rain runs off there or as snow melts, water flows down the high mountains. The sources of the Amazon are many small streams scattered across the countries of Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, and Venezuela. Thousands of smaller rivers join to form the Amazon. This river and its tributaries drain more than two million acres .....
