The Travels of the Hat, Part 3: Off the Pier

Hat Day

Reading Comprehension for January 15

"Thump, thump, thump." The rhythm of steps hitting the dock reached the ears of the hat. He looked up and saw a fisherman and a small boy walking toward him from the far end of the pier. He hoped they would not step on him as he rested. Although it had been exciting to ride on the nose of a dolphin, landing with a thud on the fishing pier was rather uncomfortable. Those boards were a lot harder than the flowing tides of the ocean. But at least now he could get dry. However, that would not mean much if he got stepped on!

"Hey, Dad, look," said the boy.

"What, son?"

"What does that say?"

They came closer to the hat.

"It says Fly Fishing is Fun," the father answered his son.

"I bet someone is mad about losing it. I wonder if it was a man or a lady?"

"I wonder," answered his dad. "It could be a kid."
