The Sense of Hearing: Do You Hear What I Hear?
Shh! Did you hear that? Sound is all around you. You hear the footsteps of someone walking down the hall. You hear the sound of ice filling a cup. You hear the sound of an airplane flying overhead. You hear the sound of a bee buzzing in the flowers. Anything that causes movement makes a sound.
Your ears give us the ability to hear. They sense sound waves. When a sound is made, sound waves move through the air. It is just like the ripples that form when a stone is thrown into the water. The waves move through the air. Some of the waves run into the walls. Some run into your ears. The outer part of you ear acts like a funnel. Its job is to collect sound waves and direct them inside the ear.
Once sound waves move into the ear, they travel down the ear canal. The ear canal is a tube that connects the outer ear to the middle ear, inside your head. In the middle ear is the eardrum. The eardrum is a thin piece of skin. When sound waves reach the eardrum, the .....
