The Prom: From Dream to Reality
With themes like "Twilight Forever," "Phantom of the Opera Masquerade Ball," "Lucky Stars," "Under the Sea," and "Tropical Paradise," it's apparent that proms are events built on dreams, romance, and wonder. A prom is a formal dance and party for high school students, most often juniors and seniors. It's a chance for students to show their peers the grown-up, glamorous side of themselves. However, it takes much more than a dream to make a prom a reality.
How does a prom go from paper plans to a perfect party? It all starts with a budget. Party plans can't move forward without funds. A budget will outline the needs and the estimated cost of those needs. You'll need a location, decorations, food, party favors, entertainment, tickets, and awards. The sale of tickets will cover part of the costs; funds gathered with fundraising will cover the rest. Once a budget has been approved, it's time to obtain approval for fundraising and start raising money! These things need to take place six to nine months before the date of the prom; therefore, a date must be chosen around the same time. Also, a planning committee made up of students, faculty, and staff needs to be organized.
Four months before the prom, it's time to choose a theme and book the venue, the entertainment (a band or a DJ), and the photographer. If dinner will be served at the prom, the menu should be finalized. A guest list should be prepared as well.
