China is a very large country. It is on the continent of Asia. China is about the same size as the whole continent of Europe. China has many people - over 1.3 billion in 2009. This is about one-fifth of the world's population. More people live in China than in any other country. The capital city is Beijing. The 2008 Summer Olympics were held in Beijing.
Chinese writing is done with symbols called characters instead of letters. Each character stands for an idea or a word. They characters must be learned by heart. To read well in Chinese, a child must learn between three and four thousand characters.
