Deep in the murky, dark water of Lake Champlain, a shadowy form moves - or so it has been said. On a summer day in 1977, someone took a picture of what looked like a sea monster swimming in the lake.
You have probably heard of the Loch Ness monster in Scotland. Have you heard about the creature that many have reported seeing in Lake Champlain? In Port Henry, New York, "Champ" is a local celebrity with his own holiday the first Saturday in August.
Lake Champlain is a lake that straddles the border between New York and Vermont. The lake is about 125 miles long and more than 400 feet deep in places.
Some say that the first European to see Champ was the explorer, Samuel de Champlain. Before Champlain, local native tribes knew of the animal's existence and called it "Tatoskok." Some say they have seen the monster, while others contend that the reports are a hoax.
