The Hubble Space Telescope
Telescopes let us look at the stars and planets. Telescopes on Earth must be located where there are few city lights. The air must be as clean and clear as possible. Still, waves of light change as they pass through Earth's atmosphere. This changes the way things look through a telescope on Earth. To solve this problem, a telescope was launched into space.
The Hubble Space Telescope was launched by NASA in 1990. It's a very large telescope! It weighs as much as two elephants. It's as long as a large school bus. It orbits the Earth at about 300 miles per hour, 380 miles above the Earth's surface.
