"The Georgia Peach"
A peach is a fruit. It grows on trees. It is juicy. There is one seed in the middle of the fruit. The skin of the peach is soft. Georgia is called "the Peach State." Peaches first grew there in 1571. They were grown by Cherokee Indians. In 1851, peaches were shipped to other states. The Georgia peach is a fruit. It is also the nickname of one of the greatest baseball players of all time.
On December 18, 1886, Tyrus Raymond Cobb was born. He was later called Ty. He was born in Georgia. He is the oldest of three children. His father was strict. He wanted Ty to be the best.
Ty liked baseball from an early age. He joined a semi-professional team when he was old enough. His father told him, "Do not come home a failure." In 1905, Ty joined the Detroit Tigers. His father died three weeks before Ty's first game. He never saw him play.
Ty Cobb started as a center fielder. Ty worked very hard to be the best. Early on, he set many records. He became the youngest player to win a batting championship. He held that record for almost fifty years. Ty proved to be great player. He also had a bad temper. It sometimes got in his way of being an even better player.
In 1907, Ty took on another role. He worked for the Coca-Cola Company. He was a spokesperson. Later, he owned three bottling plants around the United States. One year later, he took on another role. He got married. Later, the couple had five children.
