The First Gingerbread Men
"Run, run as fast as you can! You can't catch me! I'm the gingerbread man!" was the cry of a clever gingerbread man in a story. Do you think a real gingerbread man has ever run away? The first gingerbread man might have run away from the queen of England!
The first gingerbread men might have been made for Queen Elizabeth I. She lived in the 16th century. She ruled England. She did many fine things for her country. She also liked to have fun. She gave gingerbread men to people in her court. The cookies looked like the people! It was an honor to get one of those cookies from the queen. Those cookies must have been loyal because there were no records of any of them running away. They were enjoyed by the men and ladies at the royal court. The guests smacked their lips as they ate these special treats. The edible cookie portraits were delicious!
