The Dictionary Mouse
Lily was a dictionary mouse. She had soft gray hair and big black eyes. She lived in the library in Elm City. Lily loved words. She liked to look at words. She liked to read words. But most of all, Lily liked to eat words.
Lily looked for words everywhere. She looked for words in chapter books. She read words on flash cards. She sniffed at words in reference books. But the best words to eat, Lily knew, were in the dictionary.
There were thousands and thousands of words in the dictionary. There were words that started with "a" and words that started with "z." There were words that started with all the letters in between. But the tastiest words, Lily knew, started with "c."
Cheese starts with "c."
Cake starts with "c."
Corn starts with "c."
Candy starts with "c."
Oh, my! So many tasty things start with "c." Cookies, carrots, celery, crackers, cupcakes, cashews, chocolate, coconut . . . Lily loved them all! Well, there were a few she did not like - coffee, chives, and clams.
At night, after the library was closed, Lily would tiptoe out of her little door behind the new books. She would scurry across the floor to the dictionaries. And there she would find the words she wanted for dinner.
Tonight Lily wanted chicken, cabbage, cornbread, and cheesecake. She found each word. She chewed it out of the dictionary. She looked at it carefully. She smelled it. She read it to herself. And then she ate it. Oh, what a wonderful dinner she had!
The next morning the librarian saw little bits of paper on the floor. They were near the dictionary. "Oh, my!" she said. "I wonder how those little pieces of paper got on the floor."
Something tugged on her skirt. She looked down and saw Tommy. Tommy was five years old. He came to the library almost every day. He loved books.
