It was almost Christmas. Mack and Jill wanted to see Santa Claus. Their mother took them to town. They waited in line to talk to Santa. Jill climbed upon his lap first. Santa asked Jill, "What is your wish for Christmas, little girl? What would you like Santa to bring you? Would you like a toy, a ball, a bear, or a ring?"
Jill whispered her wish in Santa's ear. "Ho! Ho! Ho! Santa will do the best he can," laughed Santa.
Mack was next in line. He crawled upon Santa's lap. "Ho! Ho! Ho!" laughed Santa. "What is your wish for Christmas, little boy? What would you like Santa to bring you? Would you like a bird, a top, or a toy dog?"
"Oh, no!" said Mack without a smile. "I do not want anything like that."
