The Attack on Pearl Harbor
Early one sunny Sunday morning a young man was getting ready to go home. He had been far from home for a long time. He was looking forward to seeing his family and friends again. He was dressed in his best, cleanest uniform and had his bag packed. He was in the United States Navy aboard a battleship at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The date was December 7, 1941.
For many months before, Japan had been trying to gain control of its neighbors. It expanded into nearby French Indochina. It was trying to expand into the Philippines and even into China. The United States opposed Japan's efforts. The United States cut off supplies to Japan, but that didn't stop Japan's agressions. Instead, Japan made plans to keep the United States away from the area.
Japan planned an air attack on the United States' Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor. The airplanes would be launched from aircraft carriers. The planes would try to destroy as much as possible.
