The Arctic Tundra
The arctic tundra is a land area in the far north. It is cold there. When the snow melts, little puddles are all over the ground. Walking on it feels like stepping on a sponge. Water can't soak into the ground. Underneath the surface, the ground is always frozen. This frozen ground is called permafrost.
The arctic tundra really has only two seasons. They are winter and summer. In winter the tundra is very cold. It is also very dark. The sun may come up for only a few hours a day. In the summer the sun may stay up for almost 24 hours a day. That is why people sometimes call the arctic tundra the "Land of the Midnight Sun."
The arctic tundra does have plants and animals. However, there are no trees. Because the ground is frozen, the roots of plants .....
