The Anti-Bullying Poster Contest
Ann and Kirsten are good friends who like to do things together. They like to go to the mall. They like to listen to music. They like to make and eat snacks together. Ann and Kirsten have fun.
Ann and Kirsten like to do things at school. One amazing thing they did was to start a club. The club was supposed to help students who had been bothered by bullies. So far, the students who came to their meetings liked the club. They got to talk. They got to share ideas and have fun, too. The club was a hit!
The members of the anti-bullying club decided to have a poster contest. The winning poster would be displayed around the school. Ms. Sweet, the club's advisor, helped Ann and Kirsten organize the contest.
They advertised the contest around the school. The art teacher even gave students time to work on posters in art class. The result was a dazzling array of multi-colored creations. Each poster had its own slogan.
"This poster is cute, but why would anyone think candy helps a bullying situation? That would not help at all," said Kirsten, one of the leaders of the club.
Rainbow-swirled lollipops surrounded the poster's message, which said "Be sweet." The lollipops were pretty, but it was going to take more than a nice message to help kids deal with bullies.
"You're right," said Ann, another leader of the club. "That would not work at all. This poster might also make students want to eat lollipops. That is not what we want."
"Students shouldn't feel they have to just be sweet. Giving in to bullying does not solve the problem," said Ms. Sweet.
