The Albatross
The albatross is a very large seabird. The wandering albatross has the biggest wingspan of any bird. Its wingspan can be 11 feet. The wings of the albatross are long and narrow. The bird can glide for hours over the ocean without flapping its wings. The albatross is able to travel long distances without using a lot of energy. An albatross may go for more than a year without ever touching down on land. The albatross spends much of its life gliding and circling over the Southern Ocean. At times the albatross will float on the sea's surface.
The albatross drinks salt water. It mainly eats fish, squid, and krill. The albatross obtains its food by diving or grabbing it off the surface of the water. The albatross is a scavenger. It will follow ships and wait for handouts or garbage to be thrown away.
