What kinds of things do you hope for? Do you hope for a new bike, a new video game system, perhaps a new pet? Perhaps you hope for things you can't touch, like health or love. Some people work to give hope to others. Terry Fox was such a man.
Terry was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on July 28, 1958. A few years later, his family moved to British Columbia. Terry loved sports, especially swimming and diving. He won many awards for his endurance. Many people thought he would go far in competition as he got older.
Terry wanted to be a physical education teacher. While he was in college, Terry was diagnosed with osteosarcoma - bone cancer. In 1977 when he was 18, his right leg was amputated just above the knee. Terry was determined not to let cancer stop him. Shortly after his surgery, he was fitted with an artificial leg. In three weeks he was walking again.
