Terrible Lizards
The word dinosaur means "terrible lizard." Dinosaurs appeared on Earth about 240 million years ago. What were these strange reptiles that lived during the Mesozoic Era? What did they look like? What did they eat?
Dinosaurs were a special group of reptiles. They came in all sizes and shapes. They had a different posture than most reptiles. Dinosaurs' legs were set directly underneath their bodies. Some even walked on two legs.
Dinosaurs lived on land. Scientists believe that they lived on all the continents. When they first appeared, the super-continent of Pangaea was breaking apart. As the land masses drifted, dinosaurs moved with them. Over time, different species evolved in different parts of the world.
