Experts say that Mark Spitz is one of the greatest swimmers of all time. He was born on February 10, 1950. He was born in California. His family moved to Hawaii when he was two years old. His dad taught him how to swim. His family moved back to California. Mark swam in races. He was good.
When Mark was nine years old, he started training. He wanted to become a great swimmer. Between the ages of 10 and 16, he won many races. He set records. In 1967, he swam in the Pan American Games. The Pan American Games are held every four years. They are similar to the Olympics. Only countries in the Western Hemisphere compete in the Pan American Games. The Olympic Games are for athletes from all over the world. Mark Spitz won five gold medals at the Pan American Games.
